In Ontario in 2026 that number sits around $2.50 to $3.50 per watt for a straightforward residential roof, falling toward the bottom of the range on larger arrays because the fixed costs spread further.

Sizing follows your consumption, not your roof area. A household using 9,000 kWh a year needs roughly 8 kW in southern Ontario. Oversizing past your own usage rarely pays under net metering, because you are credited at retail rates only against what you consume.

What solar rebates can you get in Ontario?

Under the provincial Home Renovation Savings Program, solar panels and battery storage earn up to $10,000, and it sits in the single-upgrade stream, so no home energy assessment is required. On a typical 8 kW system that is roughly a third of the capital cost, which is what has moved solar from marginal to sensible for a lot of Ontario homeowners.

The program is confirmed through November 2026 but can close earlier if its budget runs out. Confirm the current terms on the Save on Energy site before you sign anything, and treat any installer who is vague about the rebate mechanics as a warning sign.

How net metering actually works

Ontario runs on net metering, not a feed-in tariff. The distinction matters:

  • Your meter runs backwards when you generate more than you use. You are credited at the retail rate, which is generous compared to wholesale.
  • Credits carry forward for up to 12 months, which lets a summer surplus pay for a winter deficit. This is why solar works here despite the seasonal swing.
  • Credits that go unused after 12 months expire. You are not paid out in cash.

That last point is why sizing to your own consumption matters. A system built to generate far more than you will ever use is donating electricity to your utility.

Solar does not power your house in a blackout. Grid-tied inverters shut down when the grid goes down, for the safety of line workers. If backup power is the goal, that is a battery conversation, and the battery is what costs money.

How long does solar take to pay back?

Take an 8 kW system at $24,000, less a $10,000 rebate, so $14,000 net. In southern Ontario that array generates roughly 9,500 kWh a year. At current retail rates, that offsets somewhere in the region of $1,200 to $1,600 a year, which puts simple payback around 9 to 12 years.

Against a 25-year panel warranty, that leaves a long tail of effectively free electricity. Two caveats worth stating plainly:

  • You will likely replace the inverter once in that window, at $2,000 to $4,000. Any payback figure that ignores this is selling you something.
  • Panels degrade slowly, roughly half a percent a year, so year 25 produces around 88 percent of year one.

Payback stretches if your consumption is low, if the roof faces east and west rather than south, or if shading is significant. It shortens with a heat pump or an EV, because you are displacing more purchased electricity. Solar and heat pumps genuinely reinforce each other.

Is your roof suitable?

The good candidates and the bad ones are fairly easy to separate:

  • Best: south-facing, pitched between 25 and 40 degrees, unshaded from 9am to 3pm, with a roof that has 20 or more years left in it.
  • Workable: east and west facing, which lose roughly 15 to 20 percent against south. Flat roofs, using ballasted racking at an angle.
  • Poor: heavily shaded by mature trees, north-facing, or structurally marginal.
