Quartz or granite: which countertop is better?

Countertops are the surface you use every day and the first thing guests notice. Here is how quartz and granite really compare for an Ontario kitchen.

Quick answer

Quartz is the best choice for most Ontario kitchens: it is nonporous, needs no sealing, resists stains, and comes in consistent colours. Granite is a natural stone with unique patterns and excellent heat resistance, but it needs periodic sealing. Both cost roughly $60 to $120 per square foot installed, so the decision usually comes down to maintenance and look.

Quartz: low-maintenance and consistent

Quartz is engineered from ground natural quartz and resin, which makes it nonporous. That means it never needs sealing, does not absorb stains from wine or oil, and resists bacteria, which is why it is the most popular choice in new Ontario kitchens. It also comes in a huge range of consistent colours and patterns, including convincing marble looks. The one caution is heat: always use a trivet, since extreme heat can damage the resin.

Granite: natural and heat-resistant

Granite is quarried natural stone, so every slab is unique. Homeowners who want a one-of-a-kind surface with natural depth and movement often prefer it. Granite is extremely heat-resistant, so a hot pot is less of a worry. Because it is porous, it needs sealing every one to three years to resist stains, which is the main maintenance difference from quartz.

What about marble, butcher block, and laminate?

Quartz and granite are the leaders, but they are not the only options:

  • Marble is beautiful but soft and porous, so it stains and etches easily. Best for low-use areas or homeowners who accept a lived-in patina.
  • Butcher block is warm and affordable, but it needs regular oiling and is prone to scratches and water damage.
  • Laminate is the budget option, much cheaper but less durable and not heat-resistant.
  • Porcelain slab is a newer option that is very hard, heat-resistant, and works indoors or out.

Which countertop is best for you?

Choose quartz if you want low maintenance, consistent colour, and a worry-free surface, which fits most busy Ontario households. Choose granite if you want a natural, unique stone and value maximum heat resistance over never having to seal. Since both cost about the same, the decision is really about maintenance and the look you love. New countertops are also a core part of kitchen value, which we cover in our kitchen cost guide and our value guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is quartz better than granite?

For most homeowners, quartz is easier to live with because it never needs sealing and resists stains, while granite is better if you want a natural, unique stone with top heat resistance. Both are durable and cost about the same.

Does quartz stain?

Quartz is nonporous, so it strongly resists staining from wine, oil, and coffee. Wiping spills promptly keeps it looking new, and it never needs sealing.

Can you put hot pans on quartz?

It is best not to. Quartz tolerates warmth but extreme heat can damage the resin that binds it, so always use a trivet or hot pad. Granite handles heat better.

Does granite need to be sealed?

Yes. Because granite is a natural, porous stone, it should be sealed every one to three years to resist stains. Quartz never needs sealing.

How much do quartz and granite countertops cost in Ontario?

Both typically cost $60 to $120 per square foot installed, depending on the colour, thickness, edge profile, and complexity of the layout.
